Full Spectrum sun screen decreases the chances that you will get skin cancer. As you can see skin cancer is a increasing problem in the United States, and has been for the past couple decades.  Skin cancer is best defined as a malignant growth on your skin.  There are many causes of skin cancer, but first we have to go over the different types of skin cancer.  With all three of the types of skin cancer they can be diagnosed quite easily since they normally only effect the first couple layers of skin.  It can be described as a new growth on the skin, or a sore that will not heal.  There are three main types of skin cancer, and out of those three two are very treatable and most of the time is not life threatening.

Skin cancer is the most popular form of cancer, it's more popular then lung cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.  It is said that over a million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, and that half of Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they are 65 years of age.  Here are some risk factors associated with skin cancer, none of these factors contribute directly to skin cancer, they just increase the chances of you Sun burns can lead to skin cancer in some cases.getting it.

  • Smoking Tobacco and other related products can increase the risk of getting skin cancer by at least 50%.

  • Genetic predisposition like moles of different sizes that appear within six months of birth.  Moles or "Nevi" larger then 20mm in size are higher risk for becoming cancerous.

  • Human Papilloma Virus or (HPV) is associated with a form of cancer of the genital, anal, oral, pharynx, and fingers.  It is believed that the HPV vaccine may help to prevent these cancers as well as cervical cancer.

  • UV-Radiation, or getting to much of it may cause skin cancer, it damages the DNA either directly or indirectly.  Overexposure to UVA and UVB have both showed signs of  increasing the risk of skin cancer.  Natural UV exposure (Sun) and artificial UV exposure (Tanning bed) both are possibly associated with skin cancer.

  • Skin cancer is one of the potential dangers of Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation, which is a method that people use to sterilize things like food, air, and water.

Tanning beds have also been linked to cases of skin cancer. There are also things that you can do to minimize your risk for skin cancer. It is considered impossible to completely eliminate the risk of skin cancer.  There are things that you can do to minimize the risks.  Here is a list of things you can do to minimize your risks of getting skin cancer.

  • Reduce the overexposure to UV radiation

  • Avoid sun exposure between the hours of 9am and 4pm to reduce the risk.

  • Wear long clothing when going outside during those hours.

  • If you do have to go into the sun for extended periods of time use sunscreen that blocks out UVA and UVB radiation.

The next few pages will tell you the three different types of skin cancer, and tell you the treatment for each type.
