Melanoma

Here is a Melanoma that resembles a raised mole.Melanoma is a malignant tumor which are usually found in the skin, but also in the bowel, and the eye.  It is the least popular of all skin cancers, but it is also the most deadly.  Melanocytes are normally present in skin, and is responsible for the production of the dark pigment melanin.  There have been many years spent to try and eradicate melanoma but the greatest chance of curing it is early detection, and surgical resection of the tumors.  About 16,000 new cases of Melanoma are diagnosed in the United States each year, it is most common in white males.  It is more popular with white people that live in sunny climates, and visit or work in tanning salons.

The best way of detecting melanomas are becoming familiar with what they look like.  Doctors suggest to be aware of moles and check for changes in them like, shape, size, color, itching, or bleeding, and if you see any that seem weird to show them to your doctor.  There is a popular mnemonic that is used to help you identify symptoms of melanoma.  It is listed below and will help you remember what to look out for. Here is a picture of Conjunctival Melanoma.

  • Asymmetrical skin lesion.

  • Border of the lesion is irregular.

  • Color: Melanomas usually have multiple colors.

  • Diameter: moles greater then 6mm are more likely to be melanomas than smaller moles.

  • Enlarging: Enlarging or Evolving moles may indicate a melanoma.

The only weakness in that system is "D", because many melanomas start as just a dot, and they are malignant at day 1 of creation.  These are a lot smaller then 6mm.  Physicians will check on all abnormal looking moles including the ones that are less This is a very serious case of Melanoma that was left untreated for a long time.then 6mm.  Almost all malignant melanomas start with the changing color and appearance of normal looking skin.  It can look like a dark spot or a abnormal new mole that you didn't notice before.

The treatments for Melanoma are roughly the same as for other skin cancers with a few exceptions.  Since Melanoma is more dangerous and has a bigger chance to move to other parts of the body through the lymph nodes, there are some cases where either taking the lymph nodes out.  There are complications with this type of surgery and many say that there is no real benefit of getting them removed.

There are other treatments available like Chemotherapy, and Radiation treatment, those have good cure rates but are better if the doctors remove the melanoma before hand.  There are a few different types of surgeries that are preformed depending what stage of melanoma is present.  There is what is called a Diagnostic punch or excisions biopsies can remove the tumors, but with those two there is more surgery needed to make sure that the entire tumor is removed. Here is a picture of melanoma, it looks like a mole except for it is not semetrical.

The best option is total surgical excision, this lets the doctors take out enough of the area around the tumor that it is almost certain that the whole tumor will be removed.  Mohs surgery is another option that is available, but is pretty much the same as the typical surgery.  The only difference is that in Mohs surgery there is a little bit more surrounding tissue that is cut away to make sure they got all the cancerous cells that were present.

For people that can't have the surgery because of a predetermined condition or that the surgery may be too much of a risk there is something called Adjuvant treatment.  This is where the patient is given interferon treatment, this treatment is where interferon's are given to patients to help produce naturally made natural killer cells within your body.  Interferon's are already produced in your body but the treatment delivers more then your body could ever make at one time.  These cells are what produce sore muscles, and fevers when you are sick.  This form of treatment is still in the clinical stages and is usually not done outside the clinical trials unless absolutely necessary.
